FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN INSTALLING A DISHWASHER
Being a Winnipeg plumber since 2001, we’ve done our fair share of dishwasher installations. We’ve also had more than our fair share of homeowners calling for us to come fix their installation after they tried to do it themselves. The fact is there is more than to installing a dishwasher than connecting a few pipes and plugging it in. Every time we get a call, the question is the same: how much does it cost to install a dishwasher?
In this article, we’re going to cover all the different factors that may be included in coming up with a final price tag.

What kind of installation is it?
The first consideration is what type of installation it is. For example, are you installing:
- A new dishwasher in a new house
- A new dishwasher in an existing space where there used to be another dishwasher
- A new dishwasher in a space where there was no other dishwasher
- A used dishwasher
The installation type will dictate how difficult or how much time will be needed.
While you may think that a new installation may be cheaper and easier, as it’s normally easier to start fresh as opposed to working off of someone else’s work, this is not always the case due to:
- Additional wiring or plumbing
- Countertops may need extra customizations to fit the new dishwasher
If you are replacing a dishwasher, some cons may include:
- Minor adjustments to wiring or plumbing
- Minimal customizations to countertops
Location of installation
If your new dishwasher is going anywhere other than in the typical beside the sink in the kitchen on the main floor, you may incur additional cost.
For example, maybe you’re putting in a new suite in your house and you want to have the dishwasher in the basement or on a higher floor. In this case, a considerable amount of additional work will definitely be needed, and as such a considerable additional cost to you.
Dishwasher wiring
As previously mentioned in regards to electrical wiring, there may be three things that happen:
- No extra wiring work is required
- Your dishwasher connection needs minor adjustments
- You need major wiring work
No or little wiring adjustments will have a minimal impact on the final cost, whereas major wiring work could potentially run you into the hundreds.
Plumbing connections
Perhaps your plumber sees that your existing plumbing connections are damaged or in bad shape, and you need to replace them. The number of connections you need to replace will determine any extra costs.
Or, maybe you want to put the dishwasher in a location further away from the sink. This means that there will be extra costs, as your plumber will have to run plumbing through, under or behind your cabinets or counter.
Disposal of your old dishwasher
What are you going to do with your old dishwasher? Are you selling it, throwing it away, or having the plumber dispose of it for you?
If you ask your plumber to take it away, there may be a disposal charge.
How can you save money off your installation cost?
If you want to get a head start and do some of the more medial things yourself, you might be able to save a few bucks off the installation cost.
This could include:
- Turning off the water and disconnecting the plumbing connections
- Taking the dishwasher out of its current place and getting it ready for disposal
- Inspecting the existing plumbing and possibly sending pictures to your plumber before they get to your house for the install
More than just connecting pipes
Installing a new dishwasher is more than just connecting a few pipes. There’s also the issue of levelling the dishwasher. Professional plumbers will have the best idea of how to do this.
Then there’s the testing after installation. Being a professional plumber, there should be no guessing about whether it’s going to work after the install is complete, or if you’re going to have a small lake in your kitchen.
How much does it cost to install your dishwasher?
We’ve basically covered the majority of the different things that could influence the cost of installing your dishwasher.
To recap, they are:
- Labour costs
- Additional plumbing customizations or parts
- Additional wiring customizations or parts
Some plumbers will charge you by the hour and give you an estimate of how many hours they think it’ll take them, while others will simply charge you for the whole job regardless of time.
Typically, plumbers in Winnipeg will charge between $60 and $120 per hour.
Assuming that you need basic additional plumbing parts and no extra wiring, you could expect to pay, on average, for two hours of installation.
That means, your cost for installing a new dishwasher could be between $120 and $240. This is the average of what you can expect.
Obviously, the more the aforementioned factors affect your situation, the more you can expect to pay.
Keep in mind that your house location could also affect the cost. For example, you might live in a bedroom community outside of Winnipeg, where travel is extra.
